NNED Updates

Greetings to the fine commanders of NNED Royal Rangers,

The NNED Royal Rangers 2012 calendar is here. The dates are good although I’m still waiting an official thumbs-up from the district office. So call it tentative but you are fine to plan using this calendar.

Rangers Ministry Academy

Our December training will be held on December 10th. Our focus will be “RANGER ESSENTIALS”. Be encouraging commanders you know to attend this training. It is a new training and is required for all commanders, even those transitioning into the new OLAL (Outpost Leader Advancement Levels) I am still trying to confirm a location for this event and should know something before the week is out.

CAMPORAMA 2012

We will have information soon about the projected costs and logistics for traveling with the district to attend Camporama, July 9-13, 2012. It will be the ultimate event for guys! Registration opens December 1, 2011. Visit www.NationalCamporama.com for the most current information.

CHARTER— It’s not too late! It’s not too late to charter!

Many of our outposts in NNED have yet to charter. You will certainly want to take advantage of the savings your outpost enjoys by chartering and those benefits are now suspended until your charter is complete. Chartering is especially important this year because members of a chartered outpost receive a 15% discount off of the regular admission price to the 2012 National Camporama.

Remembering Commander Gaylon Long

On Tuesday, June 1, Commander Gaylon Long, a member of Outpost #36 in Tilton, New Hampshire, and a member of the NNED Security Color Guard, went home to be with the Master Ranger, Jesus Christ. Commander Gaylon was known for his wit and Southern drawl, and over the last several years played an important role in the Ranger ministry. His son, Jacob, is a Discovery Ranger at Outpost #36 and his wife Chris has served on the Church Board at Praise A/G in Tilton. Commander Gaylon attended Security Color Guard Camp in 2008, and during Pow Wow 2009, headed up Security team with Jacob working alongside him. A Vietnam veteran, Gaylon’s background made him the right man for the job! In addition, he was honored by OP #36 at Pow Wow 2009 by choosing the 2nd Infantry Division, of which Gaylon was a member, as its chosen regiment, along with the call, “Second Infantry Division, Second To None!” Gaylon could be seen at many Ranger events, and he also earned his Leaders’ Medal of Achievement.

In addition to leaving his family, his wife Chris and son Jacob, he leaves the Rangers family was well, and he will be greatly missed. Cards of condolence can be sent to:

nNED The Penguin - NNED’s New Mascot

When Fernando Flamingo was tragically assassinated by the Spanish Eastern District early in 2007, NNED Royal Rangers lost a beloved mascot and a fine-feathered friend. A new symbol of inspiration was “nneeded”. Enter nNED the Penguin. He made his first appearance at the 2008 Regional Conference to promote WNTC, and after spending a little time in the frozen tundra of Maine, found the District to be quite like his native Antarctica, settling in an igloo at the base of the White Mountains in North Sandwich, New Hampshire, the hometown of District Commander Jerry Love. After meeting Commander Jerry, and learning about the Rangers ministry and its mission, nNED’s cold blood turned warm with excitement and passion! nNED is eagerly anticipating being a part of upcoming Ranger events throughout the District (that bears his name), the region, and hopefully soon the nation, as he plans to make himself known to Rangers everywhere! His goal is to witness to people everywhere about the Royal Rangers ministry and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Already, his impact is starting to be felt. Commander Jerry commented, “If you thought Fernando was a go-getter, wait’ll you see the impact nNED will have on this ministry. His “happy feet” will be travelling all over the country spreading the good news, and the “Good News”. Watch for this rolly polly penguin coming soon to an Outpost near you!”

nNED may only be five feet tall, but he is fast becoming a larger than life figure in the Northern New England District.

Dan Fifield Earms His GMA

By Commander Jay M. Woodward

Pony Express Editor

On Saturday, December 13, 2008, an historic ceremony was held at Faith A/G in Bethel, Vermont, to honor a historic achievement: Daniel Fifield of Outpost #8 was being presented with his Gold Medal of Achievement (GMA), the 37th young man in the Northern New England District to earn this prestigious award. What makes Dan’s accomplishment extraordinary is that he is the first Ranger from Vermont in a decade, and the first ever from Outpost #8, to earn his GMA!

7th Gold Buffalo

Ryley Paquette of Outpost 11 in Auburn NH Earned an unprecedented 7th Gold Buffalo! This is the most Gold Buffalos earned in the Northern New England District. Congratulations Ryley on an incredible job! NNED District Commander Jerry Love presented the award at the Outpost 11 Council of Achievement.

Seth Tilton-Fogg “Goes To the Dogs”

It’s been quite and exciting time for Expedition Ranger Seth-Tilton Fogg of Outpost #36, son of Commander Judy Tilton and stepson of District Training Coordinator Jason Wright. In January, Seth earned his Bronze Medal of Achievement, a distinguished award in Royal Rangers. Then on February 11, he got the chance of a lifetime: to parade his Nova Scotia Duck Rolling Retriever “Billie” at the 132nd Annual Westminster Dog Show in New York City, in front of a sold-out crowd at Madison Square Garden, donning a tuxedo and displaying a very special dog! Seth also has future plans of becoming a veterinarian, so he is indeed one of NNED’s Top Dogs!

Hatch Family Adopts Boy- “From Russia With Love”

An Interview With NNED’s First RKTC Graduate: Commander Judy Tilton

On April 20-22, 2007, Commander Judy Tilton of Outpost #36 in Tilton, NH, traveled to Gaston, South Carolina, to attend Ranger Kids Training Conference (RKTC), which is a National Training Event designed specifically for Ranger Kids Commanders.  RKTC replaced the old Buckaroos/ Straight Arrows Training Camp (BSTC) under the old Ranger program.  Commander Judy made NNED history by becoming the first ever Commander in the District to attend an RKTC!   Commander Judy recently shared her experience with The Pony Express.

Commanders from Maine Division Recognized

Four Royal Ranger Commanders from Maine were recently recognized for their service to the Royal Ranger ministry.   The 2007 Governor’s Service Awards ceremony was held in Augusta, ME on April 23, 2007.  Ken Bustard from Bangor, Kendall Sperrey from East Millinocket and Tim Hatch from Fryeburg were present to receive their certificate and named to the 2007 Roll of Honor.  Rob Cunningham of Bangor was also recognized, but was not able to attend the ceremony.

The Governor’s Service Awards were created in 1988 as a way to recognize volunteerism in Maine.  These awards honor the state’s most dedicated volunteers and the service they provide to the citizens of Maine.
