Maine Divisional Pinewood Derby - The "Maine" Event

By Jay M. Woodward, NNED Publications Coordinator

On Saturday, March 19, 2011, the place to be for high-speed racing action was Calvary
Pentecostal Church in Madison, Maine, the location of the first-ever Maine Divisional
Pinewood Derby. The competition was open to both Rangers and Mpact (Missionette)
girls, three of which joined the 28 boys and men who registered their high-performance
racing machines in hopes of taking home one of the shining trophies on display!

Outpost #21 was the host Outpost, and made all the pit stops necessary for a great
event, from the Haynes Brothers (Jonathan, Sam, Joel) coordinating the registration and
keeping score, to Sue Haynes and Linda Blomerth operating the concession booth,
keeping hungry racers satisfied! The races began with an opening prayer from Pastor
Tim Haynes, and opening remarks from Commander Ken Beaufort, who served as the
Derby’s emcee. Each of the four age groups (Ranger Kids, Discovery, Adventure,
Expedition) and Commanders raced among each other, with Mpact Girls racing
alongside the boys in whatever age group they belonged to. In addition, there were also
awards given for Best Paint Job and Most Unusual Car! The participants watched the
races with eager anticipation that their car would be the first to cross the finish line!

When all the races were completed, Commander Ken gave a short devotion on
how the small things in our lives can become harmful to us and prevent us from enjoying
God’s blessings. Then, it was time for the hardware to be handed out (see below for
complete list of winners) and the trophy photos to be taken, bringing a “photo finish” to
the Derby!

It was a great day of fun, competition, and good sportsmanship. Hats off to
Outpost #21 and to all who came together to make Maine Divisional Pinewood Derby
the “Maine Event”!
